Guggulu produces a resinous sap known as gum guggul. The extract of this gum, called gugulipid, guggulipid or guglipid, has been used in traditional Unaniand Ayurvedic medicinefor nearly 3,000 years in India.
Guggulu is a shrub or small tree, reaching a maximum height of 4 m, with thin papery bark. The branches are thorny. The oleo-gum-resin produced by making the incision on the stem is called guggulu-gum.
Guggulu oleo-gum-resin contains a number of compounds – a diterpene hydrocarbon, a diterpene alcohol, Z-gugulsterone,-gugulsterone, guggulsterol-I, guggulsterol- II, guggulsterol-III.
